A brief History of WoTMUD:
WoTMUD, based on Robert Jordan’s still-unfinished “Wheel of Time” series, was started in 1993 by owner Flash and several others. It has come an incredibly long way from it’s fairly humble beginnings and now operates under its own unique code base. Starting with essentially one playerlist which encompassed both available races (Humans and Trollocs), it eventually grew to the point where the races were officially separated, gaining their own separate “who” lists, separate global channels and languages, which helped greatly in adding to the overall experience of fighting for either “Good” or “Evil” by better segregating the players. In late 2001 plans were well underway for the addition of a new race to the mix known as the Seanchan. Characters were selected from the then Light Side (LS) population based on applications made by them to become the first official members of the Seanchan race, whose main job would be that of both testing and easing the new side into the working atmosphere of the MUD. A little less than a year later the Seanchan side (SS) was opened up as an available race for selection during character creation, and the gradual implementation of three clans helped to integrate this new race into both the roleplay and playerkill sections of the MUD. The playerbase size peaked at around this time (early 2003) with as many as 230 players logging on at any one time! Numbers now are lower, but with the addition of new coders to the Immortal staff chosen from longstanding members of the playerbase, hopes are high that numbers will again increase.
A bit about the MUD and what it has to offer:
WoTMUD offers the chance to either ride majestically into battle as a member of the human race (known as the Light Side or LS), spill blood, rend flesh and live the fiendish and gruesome life as part of the Trolloc Horde (known as the Dark Side or DS), or join the noble yet fearsome Seanchan as they fight to take back the lands of Artur Hawkwing and expand the Crystal Empire (known as the Seanchan Side or SS). Each of the three sides offers its own unique experiences and abilities, all of them boasting a number of exciting clans with the goal of becoming a clan master through playerkill (player vs. player fighting), roleplay and questing.
The Light Side:
This is known as the side for new players due to the vastness of the area “controlled” by the people of the Light, and the fact that several neat little perks are provided to help newbies when they’re starting out. This side also generally contains the largest percentage of the playerbase, so the likelihood of getting help as a newbie is the greatest from that point of view. The Light Side also offers massive potential for character development, offering a wide range of homelands during character creation, four selectable classes (warrior, hunter, rogue and channeler) and the ability to join a very large number of official clans. You can join the Queen’s Guard (once known as the Lion Warden) and become a protector of Andor, become a thieftaker and hunt down criminals across the known lands, join the White Tower – the most powerful organisation in the lands of the Light – or affiliated clans like the Gaidin or Valon Guard, or join one of the host of other city authority clans (known as justice clans) and fight to bring law and peace in the name of the leader of the Land that you patrol. Alternatively you can take a shadier path and become an outlaw or one of the silent stalkers of the night, skilled in the art of assassination, or even go as far as to become a friend of the Dark with the ultimate goal of joining the Dark Side as a newly raised Dreadlord (available to male and female channelers who fulfull the requirements).
The Dark Side:
A side for more experienced players, the DS community is generally smaller but closer knit, the one driving goal to beat back the Light Side and eventually eliminate the human race in the name of the Dark One! As a trolloc you get the choice of three selectable classes (warrior, hunter and rogue), the chance to join one of the official clans of the Horde like the ferocious Ghar’gheal, known for its fearsome berserkers in heavy armour wielding massive destructive weapons, or the sneaky Ko’Bal whose specialisations in the arts of the assassin make them the perfect scouts and quiet killers of the Dark One’s armies. Ever-present is the tantalising goal of not only becoming a clan master, but the chance of achieving an greater level of distinction and power by becoming a member of WoTMUD’s only remort class: the Myrddraal. Skilled in combat and possessing specialist powers tailored to be bookish while providing a nice bonus, Myrddraal are known as the MUD’s most fearsome characters in single combat: a well-earned bonus for the amount of time and effort becoming a myrddraal takes!
The Seanchan Side:
The newest available race, the Seanchan Side offers a relatively newbie-friendly environment (the Seanchan homeland is a separate continent that’s difficult to access for the other two races) and also a small yet friendly player community. Players of the Seanchan Side work to further the goal of the Crystal Empress by fighting to retake control of the lands across the Aryth Ocean (the lands of the Light Side) in the name of the founder of the Empire: Artur Hawkwing. There is a certain nobility amongst the Seanchan players fostered by the militaristic roleplay requirements of the race, and they’re generally honourable in combat and refrain from attacking new or low-level characters. The side offers the same class selection opportunity as the Dark Side, and three elite military clans known as the Deathwatch, the Morat’torm and the Morat’raken.
What WoTMUD is about:
WoTMUD is an unrestricted playerkilling (PK) MUD where noone is truly safe no matter where they hide. While it has a reputation as a “non-handholding” MUD, a great deal is done to cater for newer players to help immerse them into the game environment as smoothly and effectively as possible. Despite being tailored for playerkill, roleplay (RP) is also highly encouraged, with several clans on offer that are almost exclusively dedicate to roleplay and its many facets. Recent additions to the Light Side include side trades such as mining, winemaking and pelt making, and an excellent new guild system that allows characters to become an apprentice weaponsmith or crafter by journeying to one of the guild grand masters dotted about the MUD. With time and effort skilled weaponsmiths have the ability to develop mid-grade weapons of their chosen specialisation, which they can either sell or use themselves!
The playerkill itself is diverse and can come from a multitude of sources. It goes without saying that the three Sides are at continual war with each other, the Light Side fighting a war on two fronts: in the west against the invading Seanchan and the north against the marauding Horde. The Light Side also suffers from continual inter-clan wars started for a variety of reasons, not to mention there is the presence of murderers, bandits and darkfriends. This combines to make LS a place that, while relatively newbie-friendly, also keeps more experienced players on their toes wondering what’s going to happen next!
The MUD as a whole tries to keep an atmosphere as much like that created by Robert Jordan in “The Wheel of Time” as possible, though it follows its own timeline with the explicit statement that while it follows the guidelines of “Randland” as Jordan’s world has come to be known, it is essentially a parallel universe where events might not unfold in exactly the same way (some who’ve read the books and check the MUD out might be surprised to see Cadsuane as the Amyrlin Seat for example!). More recently (in 2003/2004) it gained Robert Jordan’s personal permission to use the “Wheel of Time” theme which, obviously was a particularly large morale boost for both players and staff alike!
WoTMUD comparison – a player’s opinion:
I’ve played a number of WoT-based MUDs, and this is by far the most outstanding. It offers a good balance between both PK and RP that is lacking in most others, and this is what has been a draw to players (whether they come because of the Wheel of Time theme or simply to try the MUD in general) since it opened 13 years ago. No matter what time you log on there’s always something afoot, whether it be a non-player character (NPC) raid on a city presided over by one of the Immortals, a globally publicised quest or just groups of players out killing Super-mobs (Smobs) or participating in heated PK or intensive RP. The combat system is second to none, with a wide range of skills, equipment and character setups available, and there is no doubt that the balance between the separate races, classes and combat setups is perhaps one of the best I’ve seen of any MUD.
With its active Immortal community you can be assured that the MUD is under an almost constant state of refinement and construction that helps to keep it from stagnating like a lot of other MUDs tend to do. As far as competition goes I’d say it ranks high on the list of competitors both within the MUD community and also against new graphic-based games like World of Warcraft and Guild Wars. Being featured on a number of MUD-related websites across the Internet it’s not hard to come across a link to WoTMUD’s main page, so click that link and give it a try! You just might like it….

RP. PK. Die happy., 2005-12-03

Like Ickmund, I've been around since the late 90's. 1999 to be specific, and it's neat for me to see the generations all present here. Ick helped me out when I was a newb, and I even helped Iliana re-eq on other characters when she was bound and determined to Pk all the time and be a Green Ajah properly and hadn't quite gotten the hang of it yet ;)
In short, everyone's said all the important stuff. WoT is not a cakewalk, the full Pk, Rp intensive and down right massive world, coupled with a difficult statting system, no tiers, no recall, hard leveling and full loot has given this mud something of a hardcore reputation and gotten it shunned by some players from other muds who expect things to come easier. But the devotion of the players, and the brotherhood of the race war, not to mention the great staff makes it more than worth the effort!

Having been on WoTMUD on and off since the late 90's, I recently took a break and tried some other MMORPGS such as EQ, EQ2, daoc and SWG.
Needless to say, they bored the heck out of me and I'm back again on the mud having as fun as I ever had.
For me it's mostly the PK (PvP) that motivates me, but without the extra flavor of RP it wouldn't be half as rewarding. And here is where I see most graphic MMO's fail. The thrill of acting out your character in whatever way you like and not just mindlessly hack'n'slash in a PvP-environment is just... well, it's simply WoTMUD. You'll have to experience it yourself, I cannot put it into words.

I "quit" WoTMUD about 6 months ago, but as they say, "Nobody ever leaves." Needless to say I'm back and am most pleased with the new changes. The MUD has new coders and the Immortals have been very busy lately making the MUD a better place. Hopefully newer players will find the MUD an exciting but welcoming place and the old players will appreciate the new features. =)

Since opening to the public in 1993, the Wheel of Time Mud has been one of the best games on the internet, free or otherwise.
Based on re-written circlemud code, the world is entirely original. The pvp action is fast-paced and intense, easily the best pvp available in any online RPG. Pvp is totally unrestricted by game mechanics, but same-side killers are kept in check by clanned players.
The game is true to the world of Robert Jordan. You won't find any dragons or elves anywhere. What you will find are intense battles between trollocs and humans, Seanchan raiders attacking human villages, channelers wielding awesome power, and Children of the Light harassing people as they see fit.
Wheel of Time Mud is just as good as only mainstream MMO games, and totally free. Check it out.

I love WoTMUD! I would reccommend to anyone! I have spent many many happy hours WoTMUDing & I've made lots of good friends there. It's great in role playing and in PK. If I had my way, WoTMUD would be your #1 Site in it's category.
